Measurement Olympics

Measurement is an important concept for students to learn, and it's always best to make it fun! Students went to various Olympic themed centers to practice their skills. Second grade standards state that students should know measurement with various units, and the activities for this day focused on inches, centimeters, and yards. They were divided into groups to rotate through the centers.

The first activity I used was from this website. Each student had the chance to take a cotton ball and do actions with it such as throw, toss, and spin. They had to measure the length it traveled. In addition to this fun activity,  I decided to create more centers (listed below) to enhance our Olympic themed day!

The first center I created had students measuring the podium where the winners would stand. They had to measure six different stand heights from the floor the the top of the red tape using both inches and centimeters.

Students then made their way to the track. They had to measure each of the three lanes using yards and feet.

The next center that I created had students measuring all of the medals from the Olympic events. Students measured each medal using inches and centimeters.

For each station the students visited I made a data sheet where they could record their answers. This gave them a chance to work on estimation skills as well, since this is also a standard.   Between all of these centers they were able to test their skills, and many of my shining students were "going for the gold!"
