Lucky The Leprechaun Tells Time

St. Patrick's Day was over a month ago, but I still wanted to share the activity that my kiddos did that day! Student teaching is definitely giving me the chance to try some new and creative ideas, and I am learning many ways that I want to run my own future classroom!
During the week of St. Patrick's Day my 2nd grade classroom was working on telling time. Before the students arrived I made sure that every student had a St. Patrick's Day pencil on their desk, and some gold coins. These were left by Lucky the Leprechaun (and he made sure to leave a note for them as well!) The students kept their coins to use for math later that afternoon.

I printed out card with various digital times on them. The card also said something Lucky would be doing at that time. In groups, the students had to put the times in order from earliest to latest. This was a great way to formatively assess if they knew A.M. and P.M. I had the students keep their coins to place on certain cards. If Lucky went somewhere where he needed to pay, such as going to the store, movies, or getting ice cream, they would place their coin on that card. (Of course they were allowed to keep the coins to take home, because it was awesome getting something from Lucky!)
The very last time card said that Lucky fell asleep at 8:30 P.M.  in locker 89. The students then excitedly went to that locker in the hallway to find a little picture of Lucky that they could pin on their shirt. It was an awesome little addition to a very lucky day!!
